What happens when we get really clear about what is important to us but we have not developed the capacity and resilience to back ourselves? Pain happens, as well as the overwhelming sensation that the relentless hard work is never going to end, let alone achieve anything.
Every day feels like a grind, a toil on your mind, your body and your emotional state. You become tired and worn out and every part of you is stretched so thin you feel like you just might break.
Surprisingly, you keep going. Often you take on more challenge, continue to struggle within yourself but just keep going. There is no other choice.
At the pinnacle of the pain, when you think you can take no more and you want to give in, when the odds seems strongly stacked against you, something happens. You feel like you have nothing to lose so you take a leap of faith, a risk. You make a small change in your choices, your thoughts or your behaviours and then it happens.
You find a breakthrough, often just a tiny crack that enables you to take your first full, deep breath in what feels like forever. Suddenly, all seems calm, quiet and still instead of noisy, hectic and out of control. The pressure that has been weighing you down and the baggage you have been hauling around lifts, if only just slightly and you feel like you are floating, the contrast is so extreme.
You come to the realisation that the hard work is starting to show some reward. You are not there yet but have taken a precious, exquisite step forward. Your self-talk of doubt and uncertainty still lingers but is now accompanied by thoughts of pride, achievement and excitement.
It is a fleeting sensation, one that lasts a mere fraction of the effort put in to achieve it but it is often enough to keep you going through the next chapter of hard work until you again reach the breakthrough point. Then getting to the next breakthrough doesn’t feel so hard and doesn’t seem to take as long.
Eventually, you reach the stage where what matters to you is so important that anything else beyond living your life true to that becomes completely irrelevant. Then the hard work becomes pleasurable and is anticipated with excitement.
The power of never giving up is real.
